Where Story Meets Science

How two sustainability firms rewrote the rules of film production — and made history doing it.

Production: “The Drama” (A24)    Standard: ISO 14067    Milestone: First in North America

In the world of film production, sustainability has long been a matter of intention. With the A24 production of “The Drama,” it became a matter of record — verified, certified, and built to a global standard. For the first time in North America, a production has achieved ISO 14067 carbon footprint accounting with independent third-party verification. This is that story.

The Spark that started it

Green Spark Group (GSG) spent years building the infrastructure of sustainable film production: training departments, guiding on-set decisions, embedding sustainability into the DNA of production culture. Green Toolkit (GTK) built precision tools for carbon data, a purpose-built platform for productions to upload, track, and calculate their environmental impact using rigorous methodology.

And when both companies came together for “The Drama”, something greater emerged, a model that proved expertise, when combined intentionally, produces outcomes neither partner could have achieved alone.

Two companies. Two areas of expertise. One powerful team, one shared mission, and one production that changed what’s possible.

A division of labor that works

From the first day of pre-production, the collaboration was designed with clarity. GSG took ownership of the human side of sustainability, the on-the-ground work that shapes behavior, culture, and execution during a live production.

This wasn’t a handoff, it was a handshake. GSG ensured the data was meaningful because the practices were real and consistent. GTK ensured that the data was verifiable, and that the methodology and tools used were built to hold up under rigorous independent scrutiny.

Why ISO 14067 matters

ISO 14067 is the international standard for quantifying and reporting the carbon footprint of a product, in this case, a film production. It is not a badge or a declaration. It is a methodology: a rigorous, internationally recognized framework for calculating greenhouse gas emissions across the full lifecycle of a production.

To earn it, every claim must be defensible. Every data point must be traceable, and every calculation must be reviewed by an independent third-party verifier who operates entirely outside the process. When “The Drama” received its certification, it did so with full CO₂e carbon accounting methodology and independent verification intact, making it the first production in North America to do so.

The signal from set

FROM PRODUCTION — The team behind "The Drama" responded to the certification process with genuine enthusiasm — a meaningful signal that sustainability, when executed with this level of rigor and partnership, doesn’t create friction. It creates pride.

The numbers tell one story. The creators tell another, and both point in the same direction. This is perhaps the most important detail of all. Sustainable production only scales if the people making the films believe in it. The positive reception from the “The Drama” team suggests that when sustainability is delivered as a quality experience, not a compliance checklist, it earns buy-in at the highest levels.

A new standard, not just a milestone

Every “first” carries a responsibility: to become a foundation, not a footnote. GSG and GTK built this collaboration to be repeatable. This model, with expert on-the-ground sustainability support, paired with rigorous, certified carbon accounting, is one the industry can adopt, adapt, and scale.

For productions of any size, the question is no longer whether this level of accountability is possible. “The Drama” has already answered that. The question now is: who’s next?

Quality Experience. Verified Data. A New Industry Standard.

Green Spark Group and Green Toolkit are available to bring this model to your next production. Because great stories deserve to leave the world better than they found it.
